Crashing back to earth

I've been quite pleased with myself recently when it comes to my running progress.  Looking back over the last 18 weeks I'm aware I've come a very very long way from where I was and I've been pleasantly surprised at what I've achieved.  A little bit of pride has probably crept in; so it was with quite a thump that I came crashing back down to earth yesterday during my evening run.

I spent a fair amount of the day surfing around the net looking at videos regarding ultra marathons and proper form, that it got me enthusiastic for a run.  I had in my mind that there was a 10k race looming in 4 weeks time and I needed to get a few more 10k runs in the bag before then.  I'd not nailed one of those for a while so had it in my mind to push out for the full 10k tonight.

Got home, had dinner, waited an hour and then got into my new shorts and t shirt (bought earlier that day during the wave of enthusiasm) ready for the big run. I thought I was being pretty careful about things and taking it slow with the Vibrams so this would be a run in the old Adidas running shoes.  I was also intending to use Strava to log this run rather than the very clever (but ultimately useless) Wahoo app that had let me down so badly on the last two sessions.

So off I set...

What I had forgotten in my careful planning around shoe selection was that actually I'd already done 5k the previous two nights and racked up 16.5k over the Christmas week. This is nothing for most people but for me it's a lot of miles.  This would be my third run in as many days and it was just too much.

Made it up 'Nemesis hill' at a good pace and was doing ok until around 2k out when things started to go a bit wonky. Legs were tired, mentally I was started to flag and crazy thoughts were leaking into my sub-concious.  I was actually, unusually, feeling like I wanted to stop and go home. I'd battled thoughts like this in the early weeks but in the last 3 months I'd been confident and assumed those sort of thoughts were behind me (literally).

Everything I've read about running tells you to 'listen to you body' but I guess I'm still not used to doing that;  usually I'm trying to ignore what my body is telling me (eat some crisps, have a lie down etc) and so I pressed on a bit more.  Soon the times were dropping and I was lolloping along like a wounded goat.

Eventually at the 4k marker I stopped. Took a breath, had a think and then decided this would be a 8k day so turned around and went back the other way.  500m later I stopped again and, feeling cross, I decided I had to quit and walk back.

At the time I was pretty disappointed and cheesed off with myself as I did the wobbly 3.5k walk of shame back home - exhausted from my 'run'. This was the first time in 18 weeks that I had bailed out  and not completed a task I had set myself, but in retrospect I realise that I have been overdoing it and need to be more sensible about my rest days.

I guess when I read about people banging out 10 miles a day after just a few months of running I'm frustrated as to why that isn't me....yet.  I'm only a few months into this and I've still got another 20kg to lose.  I live to fight another day.
Knackered...

Wahoo App Review

Wahoo's tracking app makes me mad.  It's got some awesome features like being able to track cadence, smoothness, ground contact time and set various custom audio announcements during the run.  I was looking forward to using all these things but the app can't even get the basics right.  Yesterday it crapped out almost immediately and decided not to log any GPS information at all.

It also told me my average pace was 596523:14 per KM.....

Back to Endomondo or Strava then.  Shame you can't get this stuff right, Wahoo. Your HRM is great but your app sucks.

Getting the Vibe

Here are my new running shoes.  Yes they are minimalist and yes they are supposed to encourage barefoot style running (ie; mid/forefoot strike and not heel strike).  I took them for a whirl today and found them ok actually.  There was a little bit of calf muscle pain afterwards for a few hours but I think I am not too much of a heel striker naturally so perhaps there was not such a huge change in running style - but it took some concentration.

I did 5ks on them. It was harder up hills for sure and my feet got warm (but it was a very hot day). Bizarrely I went faster than ever before on that route but this was after a good 3 day rest so perhaps that had something to do with it.

I'll have to go easy on these puppies for a while and I intend to make a slow transition by alternating with my old adidas shoes. Keen to see if my form improves as a result of using them.

Stuff, and things to go with the stuff...

It might be fair to say that I am a big fan of 'stuff'.  With it being Christmas I dropped some heavy hints that I'd like a few things in my stocking related to running.  To make sure Santa didn't screw it up I bought some of them myself and called them Christmas presents. Specifically...

1/ Wahoo TICKR RUN - heart rate monitor.  My old one was annoyingly incompatible with my new iphone and the TICKR promised some useful features like cadence measurements - which is apparently a good thing.

2/ Some Vibrams Five Fingers toe running shoes.  I've been looking into these for a while and decided to get serious and get a pair.  The guy at the shop had almost sold out of the newer Bikila Evo's and didn't have my size but had one pair of the older Bikila LS in my size and was happy to knock 50 dollars off.  So that was useful.

Of course none of this stuff actually makes you go faster....or does it...?   (No it doesn't.)

Further

10KM. Today was the day.  I didn't really consciously decide this but I sort of thought I'd see how far I could get before turning around and coming back again.  I'd made it to 7k already on previous runs so thought that 10k was maybe possible with a big effort.

Conditions were good, it was a cool 18c evening and I just powered on and on. Lap times were typically slow. I made it up Nemesis Hill at just over 7 mins and then settled into a 6:40 - 6:50 min/k pace for most of the first 4k.  Once I'd passed the 4k mark I knew whatever I did would be a new distance so this kept me going up and up the hills until, after what felt like forever, Endomondo finally called out the 5km marker.  That was my cue to turnaround and clump back home again. Coming back was a lot faster than going out.

Here are my laps...

I had to grit my teeth a bit and resist the urge to walk, but I was determined to make it back to base with my first 10K under my belt.

I hit my goal in 1h:06m:17s.  My first 10KM.  Result!
